At a City Council Sanitation Committee preliminary budget hearing, we proposed investing $10 million in a public education program around the organic waste and recycling programs available to residents.

NYLCV joined New Yorkers for Parks and DC 37 as founding members of the Play Fair for Parks Coalition to call for increasing the NYC Parks Department expense budget by $100 million next year in order to better maintain parks citywide.

In his State of the City Address, Mayor Bill De Blasio revealed his plan for improvements to New York City’s public transportation system, which included steps towards making the City’s buses run faster and expanding the NYC ferry service. Unfortunately, the MTA this month announced that the busway on 14th Street in Manhattan would not continue as originally planned. NYLCV believes that DOT should continue with the busway as originally proposed to accommodate the nights and weekend service changes.

A special election for NYC Public Advocate will occur on February 26th. While NYLCV has decided not to make an endorsement in this race, we reviewed candidates’ records and solicited answers to an environmental questionnaire.

Traffic is a notable problem in New York as mass transit is becoming riddled with delays, signal failures, and decades-old infrastructure. Congestion pricing would raise much-needed funding for long-term improvements to the region’s transit system, reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from cars, and decrease traffic congestion by encouraging the use of public transportation.

New York City released its roadmap to eliminate childhood lead exposure by 2029 by expanding blood-lead screening in children, increased enforcement and interagency collaboration, and increasing public education on lead risks. NYLCV believes that while all of these measures will help reduce incidences of lead poisoning, the most critical step towards eliminating lead in paint and dust, the main source of exposure in children, is stronger enforcement that are on the books.
