As stakeholders convened in New York City for hundreds of
events and conversations about energy, transportation, buildings, and more  – Governor Hochul announced some big climate action.

Thank Governor Hochul for advancing critical funding and clean energy projects!

Here are the highlights:

The Governor announced a $1 billion investment in the Sustainable Future Fund (SFF) for programs that will save New York families money, reduce building emissions, boost agricultural resiliency, create green jobs, and improve air quality throughout the state.

  • $500 million dollars for building decarbonization and energy cost savings, including:
    • $150 Million for EmPower+
    • $150 million to assist eligible homes with affordable energy-efficient upgrades like heat pumps and weatherization, and more
    • $50 million for Clean Green Schools
    • $150 million for utility-scale thermal energy networks.
  • $200 million for the NY-Sun program and $100 million for NYPA Renewables in order to expand affordable renewable energy.
  • $25 million for municipal recycling and food waste
  • $25 million for climate resilient farming and $12.5 million for urban tree canopies
  • $25 million for land acquisition for state forests and parks, and repairs for public campgrounds, trails, pools, and recreational facilities

The Governor also announced a new Energy Infrastructure Development Plan to “update New York’s energy planning process with an actionable blueprint designed to cut through red tape and match resources with economic growth.”

IT TAKES LESS THAN A MINUTE:
TELL GOV. HOCHUL TO KEEP THE MOMENTUM GOING!

“For too long, our electricity and gas infrastructure planning have been done separately even though they have intersecting impacts,” said NYLCV President Julie Tighe in a statement following the announcement.  “The Energy Infrastructure Development Plan will integrate the review of our energy needs and put us on the path to the lowest cost and cleanest options.”

All this and more is part of the Governor’s new Clean, Highly Affordable, Reliable, Grid Expansion (CHARGE) agenda, which is focused on driving down costs, holding energy companies and data centers accountable, building clean energy at scale, modernizing NY’s aging grid, and creating a clean energy economy

“The the $1 billion Sustainable Future Fund, along with a new cross sector energy planning initiative and advancing the new CHARGE initiative – and with projects ranging from climate resilient farms to zero-emission transportation – this investment is a welcome step towards a cleaner, more affordable future,” said Tighe

The Governor and NYSERDA also announced new large-scale renewable energy and energy storage infrastructure projects that total 1.7 gigawatts, including:

  • Eight contracted bulk energy storage projects – in New York City, Long Island, Hudson Valley, and Western New York – that will add 950 megawatts of new energy storage capacity.
  • 13 awards for new land-based renewable energy projects  — wind, hydroelectric and solar — totaling more than 719 MW of renewable capacity – enough to power over 230,000 New York homes annually. These projects will create more than 1,000  jobs and protect families from volatile fossil fuel prices and help keep our electric bills stable.

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT WE NEED MORE OF: TELL GOV. HOCHUL TO KEEP IT UP!

“Governor Hochul is using Climate Week to deliver more clean power for New Yorkers,” said Tighe after NYSERDA’s announcement. “New York needs more electricity, and solar, wind, and battery storage are the fastest and most affordable ways to get it onto the grid. These projects protect families from volatile fossil fuel price swings and will help keep our electric bills stable.”

Additional funding:

  • $16.8 million is available through the Climate Resilient Farming Grant Program to help New York farmers reduce air pollution, protect water quality, protect and enhance soil health, and increase on-farm resiliency
  • $5 million for the development of New York’s clean energy workforce through the DEC’s Environmental Justice Green Jobs for Youth Grants that will support skills training by 20 community-based organizations helping advance green jobs for young New Yorkers

THANK GOVERNOR HOCHUL FOR ADVANCING OUR CLEAN ENERGY FUTURE!

These announcements are a major step toward New York’s clean energy future. Join us in thanking Governor Hochul for these investments and tell her to keep the momentum going!

Now is the time — help us seize the narrative from those seeking to stop our transition to affordable clean energy. They have spent untold dollars trying to sow doubt and instill fear into New Yorkers about rising energy costs, and to have us believe that the only way to keep our economy moving is to rely on fossil fuels.

We can’t let this moment pass. We need your help to ensure its the voices of countless New Yorkers who support homegrown clean energy that are heard – and not the small but loud opposition.
