This Week's Film:

SCARRED LANDS AND WOUNDED LIVES: THE ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT OF WAR (USA, 2008, 60 min.)
When we make war, we destroy not only the enemy, we destroy our earth as well. In all its stages - from the production of weapons through combat to clean up - war entails actions that pollute land, air and water, destroy biodiversity and drain natural resources. Yet the environmental damage caused by war (and preparations for war) is underreported, even ignored. The environment is war's silent casualty. Using specialist and eyewitness accounts from Vietnam and Afghanistan to Australia and the Pacific Islands and supported by on-site and archival footage, Scarred Lands and Wounded Lives shows how war and preparations for war further compromise the environmental health of a planet already under stress from massive population increases, unsustainable demands on natural resources, and ruinous environmental practices. In the context of today's growing awareness and alarm about global climate change, the film shows that natural security (the protection and preservation of ecosystems) is an essential component of any realistic approach to national security. Directed and produced by Alice and Lincoln Day and VideoTakes, Inc.

It is recommended to arrive at 6:30pm to get a cupcake and a beverage. The film will being at 7:00pm.

This Week's Films:

WATER, LAND, PEOPLE, CONFLICT (1998, 29 min.)
Today, the greatest threats facing any nation's security may not be military threat. Increasingly, they are complex issues related to the environment such as: population growth, water scarcity, pollution, and economic stability.

THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF WAR (1999, 29 min.)
From the defoliation of the forests in Vietnam, to the oil fires of Kuwait, all major wars of the 20th century, and current conflicts like Kosovo, have had a hidden casualty: the environment. Unexploded weapons, polluted rivers, contaminated soil, and damaged landscapes have all harmed human health, local economies, and ecosystems. The long-term effects of such environmental damage have not yet been fully determined.

It is recommended to arrive at 6:30pm to get a cupcake and a beverage. The film will being at 7:00pm.

This Week's Film:

AFTERMATH: THE REMNANTS OF WAR (2001, 74 min.)
War has a dirty secret -- it never really ends. Aftermath: The Remnants of War reveals the twentieth century as the most violent in human history, with a death toll of more than one hundred million. Filmed on location in Russia, France, Bosnia, and Vietnam, the film uses archival images and personal accounts of individuals involved in the cleanup of war: from "de-miners" who risk their lives daily, to a treasure hunter turned archeologist in Stalingrad, to doctors struggling with the contamination from dioxin used during the Vietnam War. Its poignant stories present a sobering message of the terrible aftermath of war.

It is recommended to arrive at 6:30pm to get a cupcake and a beverage. The film will being at 7:00pm.

This Week's Film:

RADIOACTIVE AMERICA (2000, 29 min.)
Historically, nuclear weapons production has generated massive amounts of radioactive waste. Poor disposal and containment practices have allowed radioactive waste to contaminate the soil and ground water surrounding nuclear laboratories. A case in point: the nuclear facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. What effect has America's nuclear bomb-making legacy had on our communities nationwide?

It is recommended to come at 6:30 to get a cupcake and a beverage. The film will begin at 7:00.

This weeks selection:

ARID LANDS (2007, 98 min.)
Arid Lands is a documentary feature about the land and people of the Columbia River Basin in southeastern Washington state. Sixty years ago, the Hanford nuclear site produced plutonium for the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki, and today the area is the focus of the largest environmental cleanup in history. It is a landscape of incredible contradictions. Coyotes roam among decommissioned nuclear reactors, salmon spawn in the middle of golf courses, wine grapes grow in the sagebrush, and federal cleanup dollars spur rapid urban expansion. Arid Lands takes us into a world of sports fishermen, tattoo artists, housing developers, ecologists, and radiation scientists living and working in the area. It tells the story of how people changed the landscape over time, and how the landscape affected their lives.

It's recommended to get to the Cupcake Cafe at 6:30 to purchase your cupcake and beverages. The movie will start at 7:00.
