Open Space Preservation

Open space is being developed in Westchester at an alarming rate. Efforts must be made to coordinate local and regional planning in order to preserve existing “greenfields.”

Solution

The League urges the County and municipalities to:

  • Prepare local open space plans based on a systematic inventory of open lands with scenic, recreational, historical, environmental, and other natural/cultural resource values. The County’s “Patterns for Westchester” is considered a good comprehensive plan.
  • Pursue opportunities to increase open space funding. The County should keep its promise to allocate $10 million per annum to open space spending. Efforts should also be make to increase federal, state and New York City funding for watershed preservation.
  • Reclaim unused commercial sites as open space and parkland.
  • Require that all new development or redevelopment of open space include enhanced public access.
  • Continue to lobby the state and federal government to provide funding to clean up David’s Island.
  • Continue to expand the RiverWalk on the Hudson River and implement the Westchester RiverWalk Design Guidelines.
  • Continue to support the preservation of the Angle Fly Preserve.
