Ballast Water

Foreign ballast water carries with it non-indigenous species that pose a risk to local marine ecosystems. In addition to compromising aquatic biodiversity, these invasive species can decimate fish populations critical to the sport and commercial fishing industry.

Solution

Pass legislation which would prohibit the dumping of ballast water in New York waters except under certain circumstances and set up a program for ballast reporting and water sampling by vessels using the state’s waterways. Similar legislation has been passed in Michigan.
