TransportationRecent local and regional planning efforts have explored the possibility of new area train connections, light rail construction, and expansion of existing bus service. The Capital District Chapter advocates for enhancing public transportation systems to reduce traffic congestion and improve regional air quality.
Solution
The League urges the counties and municipalities to:
- Secure federal and state funds for a second, high-speed rail between the train stations in Schenectady and Rensselaer.
- Work with CDTA to reexamine the concept of commuter rail from Saratoga through Schenectady to Albany.
- Offer incentives to government employees who use public transportation.
- Develop better connections between bus and train services.
- Expand parking capacity at railroad stations.
- Promote bicycle and pedestrian friendly transportation.
- Ensure that any new road construction projects on local roads include sidewalks.
- Increase scheduled buses to rural areas.
- Avoid building stand-alone garages in downtown areas, if possible. Such facilities act as a magnet, drawing more cars downtown, which in turn exacerbates traffic, degrades conditions for pedestrians and precludes commercial activity. Other alternatives such as peripheral parking lots and shuttle buses should be favored.
