Riverhead Town Councilman John Dunleavy has a plan to try running two town vehicles on filtered vegetable oil, as reported by Riverhead News Review [1].
Councilman John DunleavyDunleavy is supporting the experiment to determine how much money could be saved on diesel fuel. His plan is based on the experiences of a local man who filters used oil from town restaurants and sells it to a local cement company for a dollar a gallon. Diesel fuel is generally just above the cost of regular gasoline. The trucks could be run on a mixture of one- quarter diesel and three- quarters oil.
In order to implement the plan, Dunleavy will need the town board's [2] approval, as well as, an approval to store the oil from the Department of Environmental Conservation [3].
