Growth and development are critical and must be managed in a manner that does not overwhelm the ability of the environment to support the population. Sustainability seeks to marry economic growth with environmental protection.
The Town of Brookhaven is at a critical juncture in its long history. Candidates for Town Board must chart a course for the future through a deteriorating economy and persistent environmental concerns. While a number of policy initiatives must be undertaken to achieve a fully sustainable Brookhaven, we believe that the steps in the Brookhaven Six-Month Action Plan [1], as outlined by our Education Fund, are absolutely necessary to set the town on a path toward a more sustainable future.
We call on the candidates for Town Board to support this road map to help make the town a leader in sustainable development and improve the local economy.
