NYC Council Asks if Clean Water and New Upstate Drilling Will Mix

How safe will New York City drinking water be if a new form of drilling takes place upstate?  The New York City Council will hold a hearing on September 10 [1] in search of some answers.

In July, Governor Paterson signed a bill authorizing energy companies to employ "hydraulic fracturing," which pumps fluids into the ground to crack open and maintain pathways for oil & gas.  The technique and the fluids used -- ranging from gels, foams, nitrogen, to carbon dioxide - have caused toxic leaks in New Mexico and Colorado, according to environmental groups.

With the quality of New York City's drinking water at stake, it's clear why the City Council seeks more information.  Council Member James Gennaro [2] is organizing the hearing.  The state is also planning an environmental review.

Another concern is whether New York City will be able to maintain its federal exemption from building a multi-billion dollar water filtration plant.  New York maintains its exemption as long as testing indicates its water is clean.
