Mike McMahonMike McMahonNEW YORK --- The New York League of Conservation Voters, the political voice for New York's environmental community, today announced its endorsement of Mike McMahon for the 13th Congressional District, representing southwest Brooklyn and all of Staten Island. The endorsement was announced at back-to-back news conferences in Staten Island and Brooklyn, where McMahon outlined his environmental platform for the U.S. House of Representatives.

Mike McMahon's credentials in transportation, open space preservation, recycling and environmental justice are unrivaled. Since becoming chairman of the City Council's Solid Waste and Sanitation Committee in 2002, McMahon has played a pivotal role in virtually every major piece of environmental legislation in New York City. He has worked to make sure the Fresh Kills landfill remains closed and is converted into a 2,200-acre park. He helped stop the city from eliminating its curbside recycling programs. He has introduced and passed laws expanding recycling for batteries, plastic bags and electronic waste. And his work on the city's historic Solid Waste Management Plan will make sure that each borough handles its own waste - ensuring that neither the 13th Congressional District nor low-income communities of color bear the exclusive burden of New York's waste management practices.

McMahon has also developed a robust environmental plan for the U.S. House of Representatives that will expand mass transit options, invest in alternative energy and create green jobs and energy-efficient buildings in Brooklyn and Staten Island.

"Mike McMahon has been a tireless champion of New York City's environment," said Marcia Bystryn, president of the New York League of Conservation Voters. "Whether expanding recycling, improving mass transit, or passing an environmentally responsible trash plan, Mike McMahon has moved mountains to help keep our city green. We're proud to once again throw our full support behind his efforts, and strongly urge voters in Brooklyn and Staten Island to make him the next Congress member from the 13th District."

In response to the endorsement, Mike McMahon said: "Even before I took office at the City Council, protecting New York City's environment was one of my top priorities. The New York League of Conservation Voters has always been an invaluable partner in my fight for environmental responsibility. With their help, I'll bring that fight for green policies all the way to Washington.
