An agreement to build a waste station in the Meatpacking District of New York City was made last night, between Mayor Bloomberg [1] and the State Legislature [2]. The 1.4 acre plant will be a part the Hudson River Park, and therefore requires joint approval.

Part of the Hudson River Park will be displaced if the Mayor's proposal is passed.Part of the Hudson River Park will be displaced if the Mayor's proposal is passed.

According to The New York Times [3], Bloomberg's project has been in the works for 3 and a half years. It has been a serious project of his, to overhaul the way solid waste is processed by allowing individual boroughs to deal with their own.

The mayor's proposal found opposition from officials who see it as a huge disturbance to the precious parkland that the station will replace.

"The mayor has clearly made a decision that nobody else can have a good idea but him," said Assemblywoman Deborah Glick [4], who rallied for the station to be set on West 36th Street.

The legislature must now pass the proposal as a bill for the station to begin development.
