For part of its route, the Long Path runs parallel to the Port Jervis line on Metro-North.If new legislation passes, the 350-mile Long Path [1], a popular trail snaking from northern New Jersey to the Catskills, may join the National Trails System [2], according to the Times Herald Record [3].

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer [4], who submitted the bill to the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, says that national designation would help secure funds for trail maintenance and expansion.

"This bill begins the process of designating the Long Path as a National Scenic Trail, which will further improve this important recreational resource and better connect existing trails so that the Long Path can eventually run from New Jersey, and possibly New York City, to the Adirondacks," said the author of the bill's House counterpart, Congressman Maurice Hinchey [5].
