The impending elevation of David A. Paterson to governor of the state o
f New York will put into that powerful office a talented lawmaker who is well known for forging bipartisan solutions and one who is well positioned to tackle New York's most pressing environmental challenges, especially in the area of energy, according to the New York League of Conservation Voters.
During his tenure as lieutenant governor, Paterson made increasing the use of renewable energy and encouraging conservation one of his signature priorities. Under his leadership, the New York Renewable Energy Task Force was convened to help the state develop a comprehensive energy policy.
"We are confident that Lt. Gov. Paterson's commitment to reducing the environmental impacts of energy consumption through promoting renewable energy and conservation will only strengthen once he is sworn in as New York's next governor," said Marcia Bystryn, executive director of the New York League of Conservation Voters.
NYLCV looks forward to working with Gov. Paterson on the advancement of a Climate Action Agenda for New York state, action in Albany that will lay the foundation for a clean, sustainable and prosperous future by reforming our brownfields cleanup program, developing a comprehensive energy plan and making significant investments in our transportation infrastructure.
One of the first environmental challenges Paterson will face is the issue of congestion pricing, to help New York City grapple with its outdated infrastructure and choked streets. Under state law, its fate must be decided by March 31 -- and its chances of succeeding are slim without strong support from the new governor.
