The Nassau County Legislature [1] this week voted to purchase and lease over 100 acres of the former Grumman property in Bethpage -- one of Long Island's most notorious brownfields -- to create a massive incubator for the next generation of jobs on Long Island.
According to Newsday [2], County Executive Tom Suozzi [3] is hoping to build an industrial park on the site catering to high-tech industries with the greatest promise for growth. Later this year, the county will request proposals on the sale and eventual use of the land.
The site is part of a 600-acre facility formerly used by Grumman Corp., although some of the land was owned by the Navy. Contamination [4] is believed to be widespread throughout the property.
