The Tappan Zee BridgeBuilding commuter trains betweens Suffern and Port Chester over a new Tappan Zee Bridge could help neutralize suburban sprawl and reduce air pollution, according to the Federated Conservationists of Westchester County [1].
The Journal News [2] reports that the 61 member organizations of the group agree with the idea of running commuter trains over the new bridge, like Carolyn Cunningham, a board member of FCWC and Maureen Morgan, a FCWC board member and a longtime advocate for rail through the east-west corridor. Not every local group agrees, however; Riverkeeper [3] said it favors rehabilitating the existing structure.
Commuter trains are among the options for the bridge that are being contemplated by the state Department of Transportation [4], the state Thruway Authority [5] and Metro-North Railroad. [6] Those agencies will have the final say on what mass-transit mode is selected and whether the 52-year-old bridge is replaced or refurbished.
