Winergy [1], the Happaugue based renewable energy company, is proposing a second wind project for both Suffolk and Nassau Counties according to the Daily News [2].
The company expects the wind farm to generate around $600 to $700 million and have a peak output of 300 megawatts utilizing a total of 86 wind turbines. The project would be situated just 15 miles east from another wind farm proposed at Jones Beach, which was also just recently announced by Winergy. The turbines would be located far offshore.
Regulatory and operational challenges remain however. On Tuesday, the company submitted an application to the New York Independent System [2] Operator, which coordinates electric power generation and transmission. But, Winergy still is going to need to seek federal and state approval as well as enter into an agreement with LIPA [3] to use their electricity transmission infrastructure, something which may present some challenges.
Local support may also not be guaranteed as Babylon has already announced opposition to running cables in their waters.
