More developers are seeing the potential of Yonkers' Hudson River waterfront. The city of Yonkers [1] on Thursday night unveiled its Alexander Street Master Plan, which calls for 3,700 apartments units and 13 acres of new parkland in a largely industrial area near the Hudson River waterfront.
According to the Journal News [2], the plan is expected to cost $2.3 billion, and will have 210,000 square feet of retail space and 213,500 square feet of office space. The current proposal specifically eliminates big-box stores, and calls for marinas and kayak launches. The design includes a lot of parking: 6,800 spaces, mostly in garages, and 480 spaces of on-street parking.
Yonkers Mayor Phil Amicone told the Journal News that "we've talked about redeveloping our old industrial downtown and waterfront for a generation, maybe more. This is the first real step toward actually doing that."
Some residents and groups including Scenic Hudson [3] have raised concerns about the height of waterfront developments, saying they will block river views.
Thursday night's meeting started a 60-day period for the public to offer its feedback on the master plan and its environmental impact statement.
