LIPA President and CEO Kevin LawLong Island needs to rethink the way that its energy is produced and consumed, according to Long Island Power Authority [1] President and CEO Kevin Law.
Speaking at the Long Island Regional Planning Board [2] on Tuesday, Law called on local governments, civic and business groups, environmentalists and ratepayers to work together to set island's energy priorities, according to Newsday [3].
LIPA released its first such master plan for Long Island in 2004, which included the now-abandoned plan to build a wind-energy farm off Jones Beach. But concerns about electric rates and Gov. Eliot Spitzer's call [4] for a 15 percent statewide reduction in energy use by 2015 means that sweeping changes are needed.
Law also stated [5] that decreased energy usage represents ratepayers' best hope for bill reductions in the foreseeable future.
