The New York Sun [1] reports that despite recent budget cuts, the Bloomberg [2] administration has announced plans to set aside 10% of the energy budget in the next decade and spend $80 million this year on efforts to reduce energy consumption and green house emissions. The initiative includes spending $35.3 million on new building lighting systems, $500,000 to string energy efficient lights on the Brooklyn Bridge, and $5 million to replace city cars with hybrids with an additional allocation of 20 GMC [3] Yukon hybrids to the fire and police departments. As City operations and buildings alone account for 6.5% of New York's total energy use, the estimated emissions decrease of 34,000 tons annually coupled with the goal of 1.1 million tons by 2017, will provide a significant overall reduction in statewide energy consumption.
