Schenectady Mayor Brian StrattonSchenectady Mayor Brian StrattonThis election season is a lively one in the Capital District, where we have endorsed 11 candidates who have proven track records and strong environmental plans for the future.

In the mayoral races, NYLCV endorses John McDonald [1] for mayor of Cohoes. McDonald's implementation of a citywide recycling and sanitation program, combined with his decision to build Silliman Park as opposed to the originally proposed parking lot, demonstrates his dedication to environmentally-conscious policies.

We also endorse Brian Stratton [2] for mayor of Schenectady. His 2006 approval of a citywide energy efficiency contract with Siemens Energy [3], which changed traffic lights to LED bulbs and instituted an alternative energy heating system in City Hall, illustrates his environmental bona fides. Looking forward, Mayor Stratton plans to maintain a balance between sustainability and economic growth, and implement green building practices for his city.

Troy Mayor Harry Tutunjian with NYLCV Executive Director Marcia BystrynTroy Mayor Harry Tutunjian with NYLCV Executive Director Marcia BystrynHarry Tutunjian [4] has earned NYLCV's seal of approval in his re-election bid for Troy mayor. In order to create a truly walkable community, Tutunjian plans to extend the downtown area as well as regulate traffic flow to concurrently reduce emissions and improve pedestrian access. If re-elected, he plans to further revitalize Troy through instituting green building practices on all current development projects and helping to create a full riverfront trail along the Hudson.

For Albany County Legislature, NYLCV endorses William F. Aylward, Jr. [5], whose land preservation efforts have spanned over 30 years, including projects to add hundreds of acres to the Pine Bush as well as constructing biking and hiking trails at French Mill’s Bridge. Alexander “Sandy” Gordon [6] also received our endorsement for his implementation of an extensive recycling program in Knox. Lucille McKnight [7] earned her NYLCV seal of approval for her Clean and Green Community Plan, which focuses on improving waste transfer stations and increasing tree-planting initiatives. We also endorse Tim Nichols [8], who supports energy-efficiency policies such as restrictions on diesel vehicle idling and requiring the use of compact fluorescent light bulbs. Herbert Reilly, Jr. [9] also received the NYLCV endorsement for his support of open space preservation and land conservancy.

He has successfully balanced necessary development with open space preservation and expanded wildlife preserves. We also support Briggs McAndrews [11], who is running for supervisor of Niskayuna, based on his personal and public commitment to environmentally-conscious policies, including the implementation of clean fuel in local school districts. In addition, NYLCV endorses Paul Sausville [12] for supervisor of Malta. Sausville supports environmental sustainability through the enforcement of LEED [13]-certified standards on all future municipal buildings.

For a greener and healthier Capital District, be sure to pull for NYLCV's Eco-Slate on Tuesday, Nov. 6.
