Brookhaven Supervisor Brian Foley, center, accepts NYLCV's endorsement from Long Island Chapter board membersFrom the East End to the county line, "green" candidates across Suffolk County will be counting on your vote in next Tuesday's general election.
NYLCV has endorsed 13 candidates for county Legislature, county executive and town supervisor, representing districts that include Brookhaven, East Hampton, Riverhead, Shelter Island and more.
County Executive Steve Levy [0] has received our endorsement because of his strong environmental agenda, which includes drinking water protection and the use of alternative energy. He has committed to reducing harmful emissions and energy consumption, lessening dependence on fossil fuels and fighting climate change. If he is re-elected, Levy has proposed a forward-thinking agenda that will promote energy-efficient lighting across the county, use sales taxes to preserve additional open space, reduce fertilizer runoff and pesticide use, as well as restore acres of the county's wetlands.
Among our other endorsements is Brian Foley, [0] who is seeking re-election as Brookhaven town supervisor. Foley has proven to be a leader in protecting Brookhaven's environment by accelerating the purchase of open space, forming a Clean Energy Task Force and Action Plan, working to protect our drinking water and cleaning up the planning process to halt sprawl. Foley's Comprehensive Master Plan will promote smart growth principles, require the use of energy-efficient vehicles and fund the purchase of even more open space.
Riverhead Town Supervisor Philip CardinaleOur endorsees for town supervisor also include Philip Cardinale [0] in Riverhead, Jim Dougherty [0] in Shelter Island and William McGintee [0] in East Hampton.
Cardinale's top priorities as Riverhead town supervisor will include the vigorous pursuit of open space preservation, protection of groundwater sources, encouragement of renewable sources of energy, green building, reduction of sprawl and preserving downtown communities. Dougherty's environmental agenda for Shelter Island will focus on preserving the quality of water in bays and waterways, controlling the use of pesticides and preserving open space. McGintee plans to continue his septic-tank upgrade program in East Hampton, as well as support new legislation to increase energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
For Suffolk County Legislature, we endorse Kate Browning [0], Lou D'Amaro [0], Jack Eddington [0], John Kennedy Jr [0]., Lynne Nowick [0], Edward Romaine [0], Steven Stern [0] and Vivian Viloria-Fisher [0]. Each candidate has outlined strong environmental agendas involving the protection of drinking water, fighting climate change, increased energy efficiency and the preservation of open space.
