New York, New York --- The New York League of Conservation Voters, the nonpartisan voice for New York's environmental community, today announced its endorsement of Phil Amicone, who is seeking re-election as mayor of Yonkers.

Since taking office in 2004, Mayor Amicone has made the environment a high priority. He has committed to the most significant environmental cleanup of the Bronx and Saw Mill Rivers in the city's history. He established the Green Policy Task Force to monitor and propose sustainable policies. And his Urban Green Space Initiative has reclaimed mixed-use urban areas as new parkland.

"In his first four years, Mayor Amicone has been a leader in balancing economic growth with environmentally responsible policies," said Marcia Bystryn, executive director of the New York League of Conservation Voters. "Now, we are urging Yonkers voters to give him a second term, so that he can continue his work to increase waterfront access and open space, make local government operations more energy efficient and improve the quality of life."

Amicone has articulated a strong environmental agenda for his second term, particularly with regard to reclaiming the Hudson, Bronx and Saw Mill River waterfronts. He also hopes to establish a new Green Buildings Policy for new development downtown and preserve more open space.

In response to the endorsement, Mayor Amicone said: "When I promised the residents of Yonkers that we would rebuild our city and ensure a better quality of life, it was a promise that applied to much more than just our economy and our education system.  As a father and a grandfather I extended that promise to our environment as well in order to make our city a brighter and cleaner place for future generations. In the last four years we've made record progress in restoring our waterways, cleaning up contaminated land and protecting open space. I'm proud of that record and prouder still that New York's most respected environmental organization, the League of Conservation Voters, has chosen to endorse my candidacy. I want to thank their leadership and their members for their support. I look forward to working with the League in taking even greater environmental strides over the next four years."
