Some Upper East Side politicians are fighting [1] against a planned bike lane in a car-free zone on East 91st street.
"Generations of Upper East Side pedestrians have become accustomed to relaxing their guard when strolling along the block," U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney wrote in a letter to the city's Department of Transportation. The area is currently zoned as a "play" street.
The DOT says it is looking into alternate options. A bike lane on 89th is under consideration.
