Sept. 30, 2009

Contact: Dan Hendrick, (212) 361-6350 ext. 206

A track record of progress on a broad sustainability agenda

NEW YORK --- The New York League of Conservation Voters, which works to make environmental sustainability a top political and policy priority in New York State, has announced its endorsement of Phil Cardinale for re-election as Riverhead Town Supervisor.

In his nearly six years as supervisor, Supervisor Cardinale has advanced a broad environmental agenda in the Town of Riverhead. Under his leadership, the town completed a master plan and adopted smart growth mixed-use zoning to concentrate development in the downtown area, and helped preserve farmland through an innovative rights-transfer program. The town has prioritized public transportation, and obtained a $450,000 grant to study East End transportation alternatives to enhance rail and bus service. The town has also spent $70 million to preserve over 1,100 acres of open space within the last five years, with a particular focus on sensitive habitats.

"The Town of Riverhead needs elected leaders who can meet today's environmental challenges and lay the foundation for a cleaner, greener future," said Brian Muellers, chair of NYLCV's Long Island Chapter. "That's why the New York League of Conservation Voters is proud to endorse Supervisor Phil Cardinale for re-election."

In response to the endorsement, Supervisor Cardinale said: "I am pleased to again receive the endorsement of the New York League of Conservation Voters.  In Riverhead and throughout the East End, it has become clear that to protect our environment is to protect our regional economy.  Those who live here and those who visit here must understand that this very special place will not remain special unless we work together to keep it that way."
