NY Delegation Votes 25-4
To Support Cap-And-Trade

NEW YORK - The New York League of Conservation Voters applauds the House of Representatives and especially the New York delegation for the passage of the American Clean Energy and Security Act last Friday.

"We are thrilled to see the House of Representatives take bold action to confront climate change," said NYLCV President Marcia Bystryn. "It is especially encouraging to see the overwhelming support of the New York State delegation. Furthermore, that the support of eight Republicans nationally was critical in passing the Waxman-Markey bill goes to show that environmental values are neither Democratic nor Republican, they are American."

The American Clean Energy and Security Act, sponsored by Reps. Henry Waxman and Edward Markey, represents the most critical piece of federal legislation to date dealing with America's energy consumption. Through the implementation of a cap-and-trade program, the legislation will revitalize our economy through job creation, protect national security interests by decreasing our dependence on foreign oil, and protect our planet by lowering our carbon emissions.

After the narrow 219-212 victory in the House of Representatives, it is now up to the Senate to determine the future of the American Clean Energy and Security Act. The legislation is expected to come to a Senate vote in September.
