A proven environmental leader
LI Chapter Board Member George Hoffman congratulates Tim Mazzei on our endorsement.NEW YORK --- The New York League of Conservation Voters, which works to make environmental sustainability a top policy and political priority in New York State, today announced its endorsement of Tim Mazzei for Brookhaven town supervisor. The announcement was made near the Ragusa Property in East Patchogue, a 22 acre site on the Swan River that Mazzei worked to achieve Federal Coastal and Estuarine Land Conservation Program status.
As a member of the Town Board of Brookhaven, Mazzei has been closely involved with open space and farmland preservation, passage of Energy Star building codes and funding for clam and scallop seeding. He also supported the Caithness Power Plant to help close older, less efficient plans, and was an advocate for a Community Preservation Fund to support open space protection.
Going forward, Mazzei supports revising town codes to allow for streamlined permits for wind turbines and other renewable energy technologies, and allowing for greater density in residential development projects located near train stations. Both are key elements of NYLCV's Six Month Action Plan for Brookhaven, which will improve the town's sustainability profile.
"As a Councilman, Tim Mazzei has already proven himself as an environmental leader," said Brian Muellers, chair of NYLCV's Long Island Chapter. "We believe Tim will continue to expand his list of environmental accomplishments as Town Supervisor, and we urge everyone who wants a greener, cleaner Town of Brookhaven to support him at the voting booth on March 31st."
"The quality of life in Brookhaven is linked to our responsibility to be stewards of our environment. I have lived my entire life within one mile of the Great South Bay and I have seen it as an area of incredible viability," Councilman Mazzei stated. "I am honored to be endorsed by the LCV. They are a respected, nonpartisan organization in our state that has taken hard positions on behalf of our environment and climate change. I pledge to work with them as Supervisor and build a lasting relationship that will benefit."
The Ragusa property is located south of the Swan River and east of Grove Street in East Patchogue. The land consists of 22 acres of woodlands and tidal marshlands. The Town approved the purchase of the parcel in 2005 and was recently approved for its application to the NYS Department of State in an effort to secure 50% matching funds for land purchase. The project will be one of three projects statewide that NYS DOS will submit for federal funding under the acquisition program. Mazzei's recent legislation to move forward on the matching fund request was successful.
