Mobilizing 100,000 Eco-Voters
For The 2009 Municipal Elections
A new generation of elected officials will lead New York City in 2009. Who will ensure they make the environment a top priority? In 2009, every citywide elected official in New York City and most of the City Council will be term-limited out of office. How can we guarantee that the next generation of city leaders will keep the Big Apple on the road to becoming the "Green Apple"? Through NYLCV's drive to recruit 100,000 "Eco-Voters" - that's how.
Our Eco-Voter campaign seeks to seize the momentum generated by Mayor Michael Bloomberg's PlaNYC and the nationwide demand for action on climate change to ensure that sustainability is embedded into the governing fabric of New York City. For the sake of the city's future, sustainability must shift from a mayoral initiative into a fundamental activity of government.
We've been taking our Eco-Voter campaign on the road, and spreading our message to the public at farmers' markets, street fairs, block parties and cultural events.
At the heart of our message are four core principles for a green future:
- Build a sustainable future by ensuring clean air and clean water.
- Fight climate change by conserving energy, using renewable sources of power, encouraging green building and maintaining efficient mass transit.
- Guarantee that burdensome facilities are spread equitably throughout the city instead of being concentrated in low income communities and communities of color.
- Make sure that every New Yorker has access to clean, safe, and well maintained parks, open space, and waterfront.
