NYLCV Releases 2008 New York City Legislative Agenda

2008 New York City Policy Agenda2008 New York City Policy AgendaNEW YORK -- New York City has emerged as a leading example of local government action on sustainability, but the environmental challenges facing the city remain daunting. Energy consumption is rising at an unsustainable rate. Our waterways continue to be polluted by raw sewage after only minor storms. Our infrastructure is, in too many instances, hopelessly outdated and inefficient. Solid waste becomes more and more expensive to export and our recycling rates have failed to return to pre-2002 levels.

To confront these and other challenges, the New York League of Conservation Voters has assembled its 2008 New York City Policy Agenda, which is now available on our Web site at www.nylcv.org.

NYLCV's 2008 New York City Policy Agenda lays out a comprehensive action plan for the City Council and the Bloomberg administration to make the Big Apple even greener. It covers five priorities: energy conservation and green building; emissions control and transportation; water quality and storm water control; solid waste and green jobs.

"The City Council and Mayor Bloomberg have a tremendous opportunity in 2008," said Marcia Bystryn, executive director of the New York League of Conservation Voters. "Action on these issues -- both budgetary and legislative -- is key to ensuring a more sustainable future for the Big Apple. We look forward to working with all of the Council members, the Mayor's Office, and our partners in the environmental, labor and business communities to make that happen this year."
