Rememering Harvey Schultz

Harvey W. SchultzHarvey W. SchultzThe New York League of Conservation Voters warmly remembers Harvey W. Schultz, who passed away Sept. 6 after a short illness. Schultz served on NYLCV's Board of Directors for 10 years and was widely regarded for his decades-long work in transforming downtown Brooklyn into a vibrant community.

Marcia Bystryn, executive director of the League, recalls his "superb political instincts. Whatever the issue, I could rely on Harvey's advice and judgment."

Schultz's senior-level government experience began in 1970, when he was appointed director of the Economic Development Section of the New York City Department of Planning. He served as executive assistant to Brooklyn Borough President Howard Golden from 1977 to 1985, and was appointed as commissioner of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection in 1986, an office he held for four years.

More recently, as president of AMREP Solutions, he provided direction in environmental and energy management, real estate support, economic development and new venture evaluation. Schultz was also highly involved in the construction of the Brooklyn Marriott Hotel and Renaissance Plaza, serving as vice president of the family-owned Muss Development LLC.

He was considered an expert in urban planning and environmental management, holding board positions at the Environmental Business Association of New York State, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, Associated Builders and Owners Inc. and the Community Service Society, which he also chaired. In addition, Schultz was a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners and Chairman of the American Planning Association's Water, Sewer and Sanitation Committee. He received a master's degree in urban planning in 1968 from Hunter College.

He is survived by his wife, Nanette Rainone; sister, Sharon Price; three sons, a stepson and two grandsons. Contributions in Schultz's name can be made to the Community Service Society, at 105 East 22nd Street, New York, NY 10010.
