New York City: NYLCV Education Fund Releases 2007 Sustainability Agenda for NYC

The following article is from the February 2007 issue of

On February 6, the League's Education Fund released its 2007 Sustainability Agenda for New York City. The report outlines specific actions to advance the sustainability initiatives it expects the Bloomberg administration to undertake in the next year. [Click HERE to read the full agenda.]

In December, Mayor Bloomberg announced his ambitious, 30-year vision to make New York a sustainable city by 2030. The mayor's plan presents ten goals to manage the city's expected population explosion, including curbing greenhouse gas emissions and scaling up the city's aging energy infrastructure. The mayor has recognized the urgency of addressing the city's environmental challenges and has already set in motion a public process that will help to inform the action steps to meet its goals. As part of this effort, called PlaNYC, the mayor will release a more detailed action plan in March.

The Ed Fund's sustainability agenda complements the mayor's long-term vision. It details the full range of environmental and health concerns facing the city -- air and energy, agriculture and food, green procurement, land use, solid waste, transportation, and water quality -- and then identifies specific actions it believes the administration should take over the next 12 months. These actions are necessary first steps in advancing the broad goals of the mayor's plan.

The Ed Fund will evaluate the administration's performance in 2008.
