Long Island Policy AgendaLong Island's impressive natural heritage and patterns of economic development present challenges that place this unique community at the forefront of the newest wave of the environmental movement.

Efforts at the county, town, city and village level to preserve the vital and often spectacular open spaces that make Suffolk and Nassau counties unique have been largely successful. Yet Long Island still suffers from serious traffic congestion, the many ills of unchecked suburban sprawl, an increasingly burdened mass transit system and development that continues to encroach on natural resources.

East End Policy Agenda
NYLCV's Long Island Chapter is leading the charge toward a more sustainable future for the region through better policy and better politics:

• Guided by the NYLCV Education Fund's detailed policy agendas for the East End, the Town of Brookhaven and Long Island as a whole, we are advocating a comprehensive approach to the issues of smart growth, natural resource preservation, drinking water protection and transportation.
  
• The NYLCV Education Fund is raising the bar for voter participation and engagement around environmental issues through nonpartisan voter outreach campaigns. For example, NYLCVEF's Brookhaven Campaign urged voters to find out who is running for state office, find out where they stand on sustainability issues and cast their votes based on their own findings.
  
• Through endorsements, NYLCV holds elected officials accountable for their progress on sustainability issues. We also run highly successful independent expenditure campaigns that support pro-environment candidates. Brookhaven Six-Month Action Plan

Through intelligent and forward-thinking planning -- combined with good elected representation --- Long Island can address its sustainability challenges, protect its treasured quality of life and economy, and lay the foundation for a lasting sustainability legacy.
