Hudson River PCB Dredging: Phase 1 Results
Event Date: 03/15/2010
3:00pm - 5:00pm Mr. Walter Mugdan, Director of the Emergency and Remedial Response Division at the Region 2 office of the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will present a summary of the Phase 1 dredging operation, completed by the General Electric Company in October 2009, and EPA's findings to date. The upriver PCB issue is critically linked to past, present, and future conditions of the New York/New Jersey Harbor Estuary. For example, the Contamination Assessment and Reduction Project (CARP) found that the Upper Hudson River PCBs Superfund Site is the dominant external source of PCBs to the Harbor Estuary. Additionally, through modeling, CARP concluded that if PCB loadings continue at current levels, sediments in most of the Harbor Estuary are likely to remain "contaminated" (by dredged material ocean disposal standards) even three decades from now. This seminar will provide important information about progress and decisions being made now that will impact future conditions in the Harbor Estuary. (Reception to follow) Presented By: Hudson River Foundation for Science & Environmental Research, Inc. Location: Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian One Bowling Green, New York, NY RSVP with name, address, e-mail and phone number to: info@hudsonriver.org or 212-483-7667 Seating is limited.
