The headine act in this coming weekend's Riverfest in Yonkers? No, it's not musician Steven Tyler or actor Jon Voight (trivia fact: Both were born in Yonkers).

As the Yonkers Daily Voice reports, Mayor Mike Spano and other elected officials will be on hand Saturday at noon to open Van der Donck Park, a new space surrounding the recently uncovered Saw Mill River downtown. The park is named in honor of Adriaen Van der Donck, a 17th-century Dutch landowner whose estate later became the City of Yonkers.

The Saw Mill River had obviously been in the city of Yonkers for eons, but it was covered up as the city developed. "Daylighting," or opening up, the river once again was a top goal for former Yonkers Mayor Phil Amicone, under whom the work started. Amicone's support for daylighting the Saw Mill and other rivers was one of the key factors in NYLCV's support for him.

The daylighting project has been wildly popular and symbolizes the rebirth of Yonkers downtown, elected leaders say.  "This official dedication of the daylighting of Saw Mill River in the newly named Van der donck Park means that a new river of life is born into the Yonkers downtown," said Michael Sabatino, a member of the Yonkers City Council. "This project will encourage new sustainable development and growth to our city and provide a natural habitat for the wildlife who thrive in the Saw Mill River."
