NYLCV Stands Up For Tappan Zee Mass Transit

Submitted by Elizabeth Mooney on Thu, 2012-03-01 11:09.

Build a Better Bridge: Why the Hudson Valley Wants Transit on the Tappan Zee from Streetfilms on Vimeo.

Calling it a "missed opportunity," Linda Viertel, a member of NYLCV's Westchester Chapter Board, told state and federal transportation officials that omission of public transit from Tappan Zee Bridge replacement plans would be a serious mistake.

"Doing so would lock local communities into reliance on this automobile-only infrastructure for the foreseeable future and would fail to achieve important quality-of-life goals, including relieving congestion and improving air quality in the communities surrounding the bridge," Viertel added.

She testified at the second of two hearings on the state's plan to replace the Tappan Zee Bridge. The first, held on Tuesday, drew a standing-room-only crowd, with many people calling for mass transit to be added to the plans.

It is still unclear how the bridge would be paid for and who will bid on the construction project.

Earlier this week, the City of Yonkers, the Town of Greenburgh and the village of Dobbs Ferry all adopted resolutions calling on Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the state Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration not to ignore the consensus of a decade of prior planning and public input.

More information about the project, including the Draft Environmental Impact Statement, is available at the website http://www.thenewtzb.com The email is TZB.INFO@thruway.ny.gov.
