Westchester Agreement Helps Protect Drinking Water

Submitted by RIchard Jarman on Thu, 2010-08-26 15:20.

A new agreement between 12 communities in Northern Westchester will ensure the meeting of new and more stringent state requirements on water quality without the need for expensive upgrades, according to the Journal News.

The Croton ReservoirThe Croton ReservoirThe $10 million funding which comes from New York City's water-management agency, the Department of Environmental Protection, will pay for improvements to storm drains and catch basins that prevent pollutants from entering the Croton reservoir system, and will create a system for mapping and inspecting septic systems that can affect water quality.

Improvements will see a limitation on silt and road salts draining into the reservoir, thereby improving drinking water quality.

"It will complete the job to keep runoff and bad stuff out of our water," said County Executive Rob Astorino."The process will be streamlined ... instead of doing it piecemeal. I think that makes sense."
