After years of environmental violations and fines, Karta Corporation, a solid-waste facility in Peekskill, will shut down and clear out after the state Department of Environmental Conservation revoked the facility's permit.

DEC Regional Director Willie Janeway says the closure is a win for the environment and public health.According to the Journal News, state officials remarked that they usually work with companies to resolve environmental issues, but Karta's repeated violations -- 4,500 of them since 2000 -- forced officials to act. The violations include accepting unauthorized waste, poor storage of materials and rodents.

DEC's Region 3 Director, Willie Janeway, said the closure will "protect the environment and public health in the area."

However, Michele Bonsignore, Karta's attorney, countered that Karta is "prepared to preserve its rights and continue what it needs to vindicate itself."  Bonsignore also said a tenant, not her client, had been operating the facility.
