The NYPA, Greece Town Board, Clash Over Wind TurbinesSubmitted by Logan Ruppel on Thu, 2010-07-22 12:07.
There were strong responses back in April when the New York Power Authority started accepting proposals for wind turbines on the Great Lakes. Eleven different energy companies submitted turbine proposals, as Citizen Groups and Town Boards mobilized to oppose the plan. The Greece, NY Town Board unanimously voted this week to oppose any wind turbine construction on Lake Erie or Lake Ontario. Town officials say that their constituents - particularly those who live on the shoreline - don't want development to ruin the picturesque lake views, regarded as a "national treasure." According to the Democrat and Chronicle , locals are also frustrated by the lack of transparency in Albany, where officials have withheld information regarding the content of the proposals and which companies are involved. The Power Authority released a statement saying that the wind farms are an integral part of Governor Paterson's initiative to provide 45% of New York's energy from renewable sources by 2015. |
