Water Debate Flows Between Croton Golf Course, Arboretum

Wetlands at the Jane E. Lytle Memorial Arboretum were disturbed to accommodate the Hudson National Golf Club when Croton-on-Hudson officials approved the course in 1994. In exchange, the club was required to supply 17 million gallons of water to the neighboring arboretum.

"It turns out that the technology behind water management has advanced light years ... We want to find out what the basic facts are and what other methods may be available to provide [water] to the arboretum," Mayor Leo Wiegman told the Journal News.

Fran Allen, a member of the non-profit group that runs the arboretum, said the institution is willing to consider construction of wells and/or pipelines. However, she said the gallons allotted from the golf course to the arboretum are non-negotiable and a matter of contract.
