The report was published by the New York Academy of Sciences.

Among the key observations and recommendations:

  • New York City should begin to adapt to climate change today
  • Warmer temperatures are extremely likely and heat waves are very likely to become more frequent, intense, and longer in duration.
  • Brief, intense precipitation events that can cause inland flooding are likely to increase, and droughts are more likely than not to become more severe.

In February 2009, the panel released the first official climate change projections for New York City, which projected that by the end of the century the city's climate may be more similar to North Carolina than present day New York.
