MTA Gets An Earful, But Where Are Long-Term Solutions?Submitted by Diana Ciechorska on Thu, 2010-03-04 13:31.
From Long Island to New York City and the Hudson Valley, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's proposed service cuts are getting heavily criticized in every corner of its service area,. But the question remains: exactly how can the MTA balance its books and keep mass transit strong? The final hearing is planned for Monday, March 8 in Riverhead, Long Island. For years, many observers have raised concerns about the MTA's large bureaucracy and MTA Executive Director Jay Walder is taking notice, announcing proposed layoffs. But what else can be done? The needs are clear - an estimated $783 million operating deficit and at least $10 billion shy for vital capital maintenance expenditures - and the consequences are dire: without a sound financial plan, which needs to include a stable, recession-proof source of funding, our vital network of subways, buses and commuter rails will fall into disrepair. All eyes are now on the state Assembly and Senate, which are considering a range of proposals from cost cutting to a regional gas tax and congestion pricing.
