Will Vegetable Oil Power Riverhead's Trucks?

Submitted by Dan Hendrick on Thu, 2009-12-03 15:29.

Riverhead Town Councilman John Dunleavy has a plan to try running two town vehicles on filtered vegetable oil, as reported by Riverhead News Review.

Councilman John DunleavyCouncilman John DunleavyDunleavy is supporting the experiment to determine how much money could be saved on diesel fuel. His plan is based on the experiences of a local man who filters used oil from town restaurants and sells it to a local cement company for a dollar a gallon. Diesel fuel is generally just above the cost of regular gasoline. The trucks could be run on a mixture of one- quarter diesel and three- quarters oil.

In order to implement the plan, Dunleavy will need the town board's approval, as well as, an approval to store the oil from the Department of Environmental Conservation.
