Coalition continues push for Upstate high speed railSubmitted by Andy Snyder on Tue, 2009-11-24 14:41.
In a press conference that included local, state, and federal legislators, the High Speed Rail New York Coalition announced its formation and released its High Speed Rail Regional Impact Statement. The Coalition's formation is the latest in a continued effort to develop high speed rail in Upstate New York.
Besides reduced travel times between metropolitan areas and job development, a high speed rail system would also produce environmental benefits. With one gallon of diesel fuel capable of moving a ton of goods and/or people over 450 miles, rail is a highly efficient mode of transportation. In addition to this carbon footprint reduction, the increased connectivity between cities would discourage suburban sprawl. The Coalition will continue its effort to inform citizens on how they would benefit from high speed rail when it conducts educational workshops in major Upstate cities.
