Water Bottle Deposit Program Starts Saturday

Submitted by David Rozan on Thu, 2009-10-29 11:00.

A nickel deposit will be levied on each bottle of water sold in the state beginning on Saturday. According to the Times Union, the bottles have already been quietly appearing on some supermarket shelves, but the nickles won't exchange hands until the weekend. Retailers have until Nov. 8 to dispose of non-deposit bottles of water.

The tide turned in favor of water-bottle deposits because the state will keep most of the unredeemed deposits. The tide turned in favor of water-bottle deposits because the state will keep most of the unredeemed deposits. The changeover comes after a federal judge's ruling last week that blocked an industry challenge to bar the new law, which adds deposits to bottled water like that in place since 1982 on carbonated beverages beer and soda.

The International Bottled Water Association, which fought the Bigger Better Bottle Bill in Albany and in court, is not planning to pursue its lawsuit further.

With over 3.2 billion water bottles sold throughout New York State each year, the law expands the program's reach to over 90 percent of the beverage market. The state expects to raise $100 million annually in revenues.
