Schenectady County Legislature Bans BPA

The Schenectady County Legislature has banned the sale and availability of children's beverage containers containing BPA. 

Legislator Brian Gordon co-sponsored the BPA ban legislation.Legislator Brian Gordon co-sponsored the BPA ban legislation.Bisphenol A, or BPA, can percolate out from baby bottles and sippy-cups, according to Brian Gordon, a Schenectady County legislator and chair of the Health Committee.

Legislator Angelo Santabarbara also co-sponsored the bill.Legislator Angelo Santabarbara also co-sponsored the bill.According to the Times Union, the compound has been linked to the onset of diseases such as obesity, as well certain types of cancer. BPA tampers with hormones within the body, making its ingestion by children particularly dangerous due to the various forms of development that occur during childhood.

Schenectady County follows Albany County on the issue - the latter passed a similar measure that takes effect in January.
