Coney Island MakeOver Unifies ParklandSubmitted by Laura Rokoff on Wed, 2009-01-21 20:38.
The crumbling and neglected 19-block area to be rezoned has an ambitious proposal, including a new 27-acre amusement district, a 12-acre park, thousands of new housing, hotels, shops, restaurants and a potential IMAX theater the Daily News reports. In addition to the 12-acre park proposed in the plan, the entire proposal would "create a cohesive 44-acre network of parks along the beachfront stretching from the proposed new neighborhood park (‘Highland View Park') to Asser Levy Park through the KeySpan Park and Steeplechase Plaza, the proposed amusement park and the Aquarium" as described on the Department of City Planning web site. This plan has significant city map changes that could potentially create extensive and much needed parkland for the city. Beginning with the unveiling of the $2.5 billion plan starts a seven month approval process. Involved in the approval are numerous different departments and legislative bodies including community boards, the Department of City Planning, borough presidents, City Council and the state Legislature.
