The Presidential Candidates' Clean-Car Plans

The issue of high-efficiency and clean automobiles isn't likely to be the focus of any TV commercials in the final days of the presidential campaign, but that doesn't make the issue any less important.

Jim Motavalli's column in the New York Times dissects the plans of John McCain and Barack Obama to create a plug-in hybrid vehicle. As Motavalli puts it, such a car is the "holy grail" of Washington and Detroit -- but only if government, automakers, investors and market demand conspire to make it a reality.
