It's Elementary: School District Goes Green

The Clarkstown school district in New City, Rockland County, has inked a contract that guarantees savings of $6.2 million over 10 years in natural gas and electricity bills.

The initiative relies on software to monitor the use of electricity and natural gas in the district's 16 buildings.The initiative relies on software to monitor the use of electricity and natural gas in the district's 16 buildings.According to the Journal News, the district will save the funds through energy conservation and by following energy-efficient practices recommended by the Dallas-based Energy Education Inc., which do not involve capital expenditure, said Margaret Keller-Cogan, superintendent of Clarkstown schools.

Under the plan, the school district would use a proprietary software to monitor the use of electricity and natural gas in its 16 buildings, then use that information to find areas where energy use can be reduced. It would also include hiring an energy manager who would train staff and students in energy-saving methods.
