Palin Casts Pall On EnvironmentSubmitted by Joseph Basralian on Thu, 2008-09-04 21:30.
Sarah Palin's convention address pulled the Republican ticket even further toward favoring carbon-emitting oil & gas, at the expense of clean tech. She spent several minutes discussing her efforts as Alaska's Governor to develop carbon-emitting fossil fuels, yet only half a sentence to mention clean, renewable alternatives such as solar and wind [Transcript]. Palin favors drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and has not yet acknowledged that human activity is contributing to global warming. "Energy independence," a phrase promoted by a Republican pollster on Monday to defend new oil drilling in the U.S. (and deflect global warming trouble), drew applause during her speech. This followed chants of "Drill, Baby, Drill!" during the Giulani speech that preceded hers. Obama has taken a very different approach, and is endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters. In contrasting Obama with the McCain ticket, the League has declared, "John McCain and the Grand ‘Oil' Party Platform Offer More of the Same." |
