LIPA Committee To Determine Shoreham's Future

Submitted by Michelle Subbiondo on Tue, 2008-06-17 16:22.

As energy demands continue to grow across Long Island Kevin Law, head of the Long Island Power Authority, has created an advisory committee charged with determining the future of the mothballed Shoreham nuclear power plant.

Newsday reports that with rising fuel prices sending power rates through the roof and the demand for energy increasing by up to 7 percent a year on some parts of the island, Law has begun to look into repowering old plants as well as urging customers to use more energy efficient appliances. Shoreham could become Long Island's first stop for gas piped over from Connecticut as LIPA officials continue to work on bringing more electric and gas power to the region.

Law is also working on a pilot project that would put smart meters in homes in Bethpage and Hauppauge, allowing customers to see how much electricity they're using.
