College Students Sponsor Eco-Friendly Move OutSubmitted by Amy Rhodin on Mon, 2008-05-19 15:05.
Students moving out of NYU dormitories this week were able to bypass the environmental catastrophe of throwing away a year's worth of unused items. Green Apple Move Out, a university project designed to reduce campus waste, located itself in 10 of the 25 Greenwich Village university dorms and collected recyclable goods as students cleaned out their rooms. According to The New York Times, organizers said they expected to collect at least 25,000 pounds of unwanted material and nonperishable food. Every item-which included textbooks, computers, bicycles, and shoes-was donated to be reused by city nonprofits and other groups, including the Bowery Mission, City Harvest, and Chemo Comfort. Organizers of the drive hope to have the project running in every dormitory within the next five years and significantly improve the eco-friendliness of university living. |
